Hello, I’m Emma, a Senior Communications Consultant with over
20 years’ experience at some of the UK’s largest and most loved charity brands.
My focus is on working with organisations that do good and using my skills and experience to make audiences sit up, take notice and make a positive change.
If you don’t know where to start or don’t have time to do it yourself, let me help. I can scope out your audiences, business objectives and resources to deliver a bespoke approach.
I love nothing more than creating campaigns that stand out. I can manage them from start to finish or run elements of the campaign. I’ve led on projects that have reached millions and prompted positive action, and have experience across the marketing-comms mix and a variety of budgets.
If you want compelling copy, look no further.
I can bust jargon and craft on-brand messages that resonate, encouraging people to take action.
I know what makes a great story and how to pull the magic ingredients together. From broadcast to broadsheets, tabloids, podcasts and influencers, I understand how the media tick and how to secure on-message coverage.
With two decades of in-house experience, I know exactly how clients feel and how busy you are. I can help guide and support in-house comms teams, establishing new processes, advising on structures, job descriptions, assisting with interviews and more.
Awards can be amazing for team motivation and attracting new business, and I have a strong track record in delivering nominations. I provide a fresh pair of eyes composing or reviewing award entries, helping you land all the key points within that all-important word count.
I can work up video treatments and scripts, liaising with editors to deliver creative productions that pack a punch. I can advise on brand, having led and supported rebrands and refreshes. I also have several associates I work with to provide further specialist support should you need it.
This St John Ambulance campaign, which I led a very talented team on while in-house, saved over 50 babies' lives, reached millions and inspired more people to learn first aid. It kick-started a brand evolution which saw St John Ambulance highly commended for brand of the year at the Marketing Week Awards. This video summarises the many measurements we smashed (note: at that time 40 babies had been helped). You can read more about the secrets of its success in a piece I wrote for The Guardian.
I gave consultancy support on a retained basis for six months, providing senior-level counsel to the Chief Executive and guidance to the small communications team. During this time I helped the team launch their new brand identity and strategy and a new website. I also led on a joint campaign with Leukaemia Care to help people aged 65-75 (who are most at risk) to ‘Spot Leukaemia’ with the help of Henry the parrot.
While Head of Brand and Communications, I led on this St John Ambulance collaboration with supermarket Tesco, creating a babygrow that spelled out the instructions for baby CPR. We launched the campaign with a video on Facebook and other social channels and it had over 5 million views as well as oodles of PR.
As Communications and Digital Director at Dogs Trust I led the team during the Covid-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis which sadly saw an increase in calls to the charity's helpline from people wanting to give up their dog. We spotted an opportunity to show anyone thinking of giving up their dog how caring the staff on our helpline were and to help put Dogs Trust front of mind for help and advice. This radio ad and social content reached 12 million and awareness of our service rose from 50 to 53%. PR outreach resulted in 175 pieces of coverage, 90% using our call to action, with 140,000 visiting our website advice hub. It's only fitting that the incredible team was nominated for a PR Week Award as a result.
To raise awareness of puppy smuggling where tiny pups are shipped from Central and Eastern Europe in appalling conditions but sold to unsuspecting buyers as 'local' pups, we launched Don't be Dogfished. Playing on the idea of catfishing - when something isn't quite what it seems - and the insta vs reality trend, we shared advice with potential buyers and encouraged them to think twice. A stunt involving a van like those used by smugglers with 'dirty graffiti' showing what really lurks behind the doors helped secure media coverage, along with emotive case studies of people who had bought a puppy who wasn't what it seemed and who tragically died shortly after. With coverage including the Sunday Times, Mail Online, Metro, This Morning and ITV News as well as social and digital marketing we got the message out far and wide.
Before I started my consultancy business in late 2021, I was Communications and Digital Director at Dogs Trust, the UK’s leading dog welfare charity and held senior Communications positions at leading first aid charity, St John Ambulance. I previously specialised in PR for Breakthrough Breast Cancer (now called Breast Cancer Now) and worked as a copywriter and editor.
I have led teams on strategies and on marketing and communications campaigns that brought about positive changes in brand tracker scores, web traffic, digital income, media coverage, social engagement and that have saved lives. I’ve led teams on brand refreshes, on awards programmes and events, and have always loved getting involved in the press releases, social copy, video treatments and more. You name it, I’ve probably done it if it involves communications!
I’m incredibly results driven and will always be focused on the ‘why?’. On top of metrics like income, website views, engagement, coverage and brand tracker or perception scores, I’m proud that teams I’ve led or campaigns I’ve run have won awards (I’ve even won a CIPR award for my obsession with measurements - I'm a geek and proud of it!). The last in-house team I led was nominated for in-house team of the year (public/third sector) in the PR Week Awards.
I really enjoy being a consultant now and using my experience to help other brands and comms professionals.
I have a collaborative approach and pride myself on creating joyful working relationships that deliver results. Whether you are new to communications and need someone to kickstart your comms journey or a seasoned professional with a need for specialist support or to bounce things off someone, I'd love to hear from you.
Please get in touch if you think I can help.
I'm always excited to explore a new challenge and work with lovely people who want to do good, so please drop me a line.
I'm based on the Herts/Essex border close to London and Cambridge. I mainly work remotely though happy to travel and to discuss other arrangements.
